Guest Post: Bassling – Dawn Dub
Schemawound’s call for remixes must’ve gone out a few weeks before I discovered his blog through the Disquiet Junto. It also coincided with my remix-crazy January, in which I remixed eight songs.
The track Dawn appealed to me when I heard the album. I think it took me places because it reminded me of ‘the wires’ I worked with from 2004-09. This large-scale aeolian harp was designed by Alan Lamb, who I worked with in 2006 as part of the Unsound Festival. (An early Australian sister festival to the Polish one that’s been in New York.)
Alan introduced me to piezo contact microphones, which have been a feature of my recent work remixing playgrounds for the centenary of Leeton.
You can probably guess from the remix that I like to tap my foot to music. I added drums to Schemawound’s Dawn, as well as rhythmic gating and extreme repitching, in the same way as when I started remixing Alan Lamb’s wires. Because I haven’t edited the track, aside from reversing it, I’ve called this interpretation a dub rather than a remix.
Haven’t heard this dub on a big system yet but I’m looking forward to playing it next time I’m on a PA.
