Hello, I Am Asleep
Today C. Reider has released his new album “The Conjucts”. The first track on the album reworks my songs “Hello World, I Am Lonely Too” and “Fall Asleep Walking” as well as field recordings by Manabushimada. Like the song, the entire album is reworked from material that was released with a Creative Commons license allowing derivative works.
This album is the first release from Derivative Netlabel. The concept of the label is to show appreciation for and spread awareness of derivative friendly Creative Commons licenses. Reider has written a lengthy mission statement on the site making the case for derivative friendly licenses.
I know many artists who choose to release their material under more restrictive licenses out of fear of their material being misused. Releasing my recent works under a derivative friendly license has been one of the more artistically rewarding things I have done. Instead of ending it’s life upon release, my recent album “They Want To Make Your Body Move. I Want To Hold You Perfectly Still.” has continued to grow and change. First the remix album “Body Movements” was created and then the remix from C. Reider. I am aware of several other people currently working with this material as well. I feel as if releasing the album was just the initial seed and watching it continue to grow and influence others is one of the most amazing things I have experienced.
As you listen to C. Reider’s album think about the fact that under traditional copyright law this material could never have existed.
